Intern update Feb 2013 – Alex Sasso has been appointed as a Stranding Technician with The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. It is a 501 (c) (3) not for profit organization that operates New York State’s only Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program. The primary mission of the Riverhead Foundation is to preserve and protect our marine environment through education, rehabilitation, and research. Alex is responsible for caring for marine mammals and sea turtles in the hospital, performing routine physical examinations, administering medications and monitoring their progress. She also responds to live animals on beaches that need to be assessed and possibly rescued for rehabilitation, assists with necropsies of large whales and other cetaceans and works on educating the public about local marine wildlife and the marine environment.  Photo below: Alex assessing the health of a grey seal pup in New York:
